Protection and nourishment of the Rinella beach

Protection and nourishment works of the beach of Rinella – Island of Salina (Aeolian Islands)

The aim of the project is the recovery and reconstruction of the historic Rinella beach on the island of Salina, as well as the protection from the risk of collapse due to excavation at the foot of the cliff behind the beach and characterized by the typical coastal caves.

The integrated coastal protection intervention consists of:

  • a semi-submerged brush made of natural boulders placed to protect the stretch of coast;
  • the creation of grazing cliffs in natural boulders;
  • the nourishment of the coast, taking into consideration the natural trend of the coast line, tested through special studies on the model.

In the period September 2012 – July 2013 the works of the executive project of the 1st functional section were carried out.

The Final Completion Project was approved in May 2015 and the Municipality of Leni is awaiting funding for the completion of the works.
